Sub Intel and Asus are inviting PC users to contribute ideas for the design of future PCs.

The plan, said the companies, is to come up with “the world's first community-designed PCs”.

"We believe the spark for innovation can come from anywhere," said Mike Hoefflinger, general manager of Intel's Partner Marketing Group.

Sub Motorola’s plans to re-energise its mobile phone business could rest on the success of its strategy to adopt a Linux-based operating system for next-generation handsets, including smartphones.

While Motorola may have lost ground in the handset market to rivals such as Nokia, Samsung, RIM and even new guy Apple, its choice of a Linux-based operating system and in particular its enthusiastic support for Google’s Android operating system, could yet revitalise its smartphone product plans.

Sub US researchers from Clemson University have made silicon-cored optical fibre using techniques compatible with mass production.

There are two main advantages in silicon cored fibre.

"First is that silicon is transparent further into the infrared than conventional glasses as such this opens up doors to applications, such as selected biomedical and sensor uses, that conventional fibres can not fulfil," Professor John Ballato told Electronics Weekly.
